Matcha (抹茶) is a special type of powdered green tea from Japan, made from young tea leaves (tencha) that are shaded before harvest, then steamed, dried, and finely ground with stone mills.
Key characteristics:
Consuming the whole leaf: Unlike regular steeped teas, with matcha you drink the entire powdered leaf. This means you absorb all the nutrients, antioxidants, and caffeine contained in the tea leaves.
Vivid green color: Because the leaves are shaded, their chlorophyll content increases, resulting in a bright green color and a distinctive sweet umami flavor.
Versatile applications: Beyond Japanese tea ceremony, matcha is widely used in culinary creations, beverages, desserts, and even cosmetics.
Matcha originated in ancient China, but it was refined and developed into a sophisticated ritual in Japan, especially within the Japanese tea ceremony (茶道 – chadō). The most famous matcha-producing regions are Uji (Kyoto), Nishio (Aichi), Yame (Fukuoka), and Shizuoka.
